S.T. braced himself on the seat and glared at her. "I never told anybody anything!"

"Oh right, like you never started this stupid challenge to begin with!" Julia grabbed another set of balls from the attendant without looking at the man. "You know who's going to win this round, cowboy? I am."

Whoosh. Thunk!

S.T. watched her with a mix of anger and admiration. Julia in a rage was a sight to behold. Her dark eyes shone like polished onyx. A color accented the line of her cheekbones and the red in that decadent mouth. She hauled back like an all-star and fired another ball, glancing this one off the target. The crowd gasped.

"Well, I'm gonna win in the end, sweetheart," he taunted, letting his temper take control of his tongue. If she was going to try, convict, and sentence him, he figured he might as well be guilty of something. "I never mentioned a date, but since you've got such a head of steam up about it, do you want to get married sooner than fall?"

"I want to see you fall," she snarled, as her willing helper handed her another ball. "Drown, you rat!"

The ball flew, the bell rang, S.T. sucked in a breath and went under. He came up shaking his head, flinging water in all directions. The crowd was roaring. He hiked up his trunks, drawing a chorus of screams from the women in the audience, then pulled himself back onto his perch and shot Julia an infuriating grin.

"Was that a fluke or should the Twins be scouting you out, honey?"

Another fastball flew, the bell rang, S.T. went under.

"How's that for luck, folks?" he called as he hauled himself back onto the bench. He slicked his hair back with both hands. "I'm not only getting a beautiful lady, I'm getting a major-league pitcher!"

The bell rang again.

Julia dunked him twice more. Her arm gave out before her temper did. When she finally stalked away, not even the reporters dared to follow her. She kept her gait just below a jog, not willing to sacrifice any more of her pride by running. Tears of fury stung her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. Damn him! Why did he have to keep making a fool of her? And why did she keep going for the bait? She could have taken a cue from Robert and reacted to the entire challenge by not reacting at all. But she couldn't seem to control her emotions where S.T. was concerned. They lay too close to the surface, were made too volatile by love.

Her step faltered as if the thought had tripped her up physically as well as mentally. She couldn't rein in her responses to S.T., good or bad, because she loved him. Robert hadn't responded to the challenge at all until S.T.'s antics had directly affected him. Was it because he had trusted in her love, or was it because he didn't love her?

She thought of all the events of the past week and further back, taking in her entire relationship with Robert at a glance.
